KL SafariKENNISLAND SAFARI
From the 11 to the 16th of July Kennisland organised Social Innovation Safari: a pressure-cooker-inspiration experience where selected participants spend five days in and around social innovation issues. The results of the first Safari surpassed our wildest expectations. Please stay up to date of our futureplans by registering for the Kennisland newsletter or by following the Safari on twitter via @Socialsafari.

During the Safari Week worked together with other pioneers and the Kennisland team to develop and prototype interventions that reinforce the knowledge society. In small teams we worked on real innovation cases provided by real clients in the public sector, education and creative industry. The most innovative results have a chance of being incubated or promoted beyond the Safari Week.

We proudly present our biggest source of knowledge and experience for the Safari: The participants!

Hannah Aukes
My name is Hannah Aukes and I can't wait to go on a Safari and meet the other travellers! I'm an adventurous and sportive person and I like coming up with creative solutions for things we might bump into (you never know what you'll find at such a trip!). In daily life I work part-time for the ministry of Foreign Affairs and in the other half of the week I run my own business. Core of my business: writing. That's still a broad description for me, but it varies from copywriting to journalistic articles and for my application for Kennisland I wrote a poem. And I should not forget to mention that I like (modestly) to work at projects to keep this world inspired. Well, I think we stepped in the right jeep!

Mylene Jonker
I'm Mylene Jonker and much of me is in what I do. I'm founder of Who cares? and love working on the visual enhancement of things that make life more interesting.  Who cares? is a multidisciplinary designstudio specializing in designing and making spatial installations for events. Who cares? often works for organisations dealing with complex matters.
Much attention in the designproces is paid to awareness about (visual) identity and being creatively resourceful in representing and activating what an organisation stands for.

Tessa Houben
I'm Tessa Houben, turning 28 this sunday (July 11), and I'm looking forward to the Kennisland Safari. I think it will be an inspiring experience to meet up with committed young people from different backgrounds to discuss our ideals and turn those ideals into action. I am currently working for a consulting agency and advice Dutch municipalities on social topics such as Integration, Financial Services and Individual Facilities. Last summer I made a big trip to the Middle East in a jeep with a tent on the roof. I drove from Amsterdam to Iran and met wonderful people and cultures on the way. I hope we get the chance to talk more about all our experiences and learnings at Kennisland. Looking forward to meet you!

Alex Blei
Art comes from within. When you open your heart, view the world without prejudice, when you use all your senses and astound yourself, you can shape the world around you. Art forms the nature of your being, it brings people together and is without judgement. Only when you truly meet each other, art is born.

CJ Özer
“I am born in Izmir, Turkey, I am 31, I came over to the Netherlands some years ago to study and have stayed here so far –and will stay as long as I like it here. My Turkish name is ÇaÄlar and non-Turkish self-given name is Jimmy, therefore CJ. I love to smile, I pursue dreams in reality, I dont believe in borders, world is my home, Love is my essence. I believe in Oneness, i believe in Humanity. I dont like football J I am a bit eccentric, I listen to everyone with a very open-mind, yet I feel, think and do my own thing, which allows me to be, as well as ‘free’ and creative. I love music, believe it to be the only language every living creature speaks. I used to be a financial consultant for quiet a while, now I import Saffron –the romantic spice- to the Netherlands to make a living. My purpose in life is to help humanity develop, to promote Love, from which goodness/kindness originates. I express self through reflection-oriented photography, divine-oriented poetry, and heart touching ideas. In short, question is a key, answer is a door, I am not afraid to ask, not afraid to answer, not afraid to explore, thus Kennisland Safari! J’

Heleen Groenendijk

Heleen's company is called Portmantoo. Mission statement: To create high quality games, apps and animation for children and the culturally minded. "A well told story engages people and encourages participation, reflection and commitment. It brings a message across and can help to recruit the people and capital you need. The power of stories lies in the mind; they organize our memories and help us to understand complex concepts. As stories inspire me I like to work on anything where narration meets interactivity. "

Noam Kostucki
I believe in having a positive social impact, and that there are too many wasted talents. At the beginning of my second year of Civil Engineering at Bristol University, I am invited to give 6 weeks of training at Yale University. All get all excited and ask my dean if we can reschedule my exams, but he thinks it's a waste of time. I decide to do what any sensible and reasonable person would do: I go to Yale, and within 6 months receive a letter from the uni asking where I have been. Here I realise something needs to change in education.
How do I make the world a better place? I co-founded a social eco-system, which aims to bring together people who want to make the world a better place. I started my coaching journey when I started teaching judo at fifteen. I am until end of July, the training consultant for the Directory of Social Change and I have developed the first course focused on the Web 2.0 and Social Media for the Institute of Fundraising in the UK. I am thrilled to have been invited to train over four thousand people in thirteen countries, and by institutions such as Yale University, HP and the British Heart Foundation. My most exciting talk this year was at TEDx in Warsaw:  http://bit.ly/noamTEDtalk

Brock LeMieux
"There is a Zen belief affirming that upon leaping, a net will appear. This seems a fitting statement for the story. My extremely brief life has been a journey of leaps that have now led me to Amsterdam as a Knowmad at a new business school for the world. After living on the sunny Costa del Sol in Spain, I found myself back in the United States studying Philosophy, French, and Playwriting at Perpich Center for Arts Education. Leaping for over two years, I've found myself on pilgrimage to Santiago, Varanasi, Palestine, and Paris. My passion is travel, mostly for the sake of moving. After a cold winter squatting with circus performers in Montreal, Knowmads has been a great leap that has shown me an entirely new way of moving. Happy travels everyone!"

Bart Roosenboom
I am Bart and I have been an intern at Kennisland for the last 5.5 months. During my studies I have thrown myself into the fields of politics, society and education. In the next two years I will finish this by doing a research master in Educational Sciences. During my internship I have heard and read a lot about social innovation, but I have never really experienced or conducted it myself. Therefore I would love to end my internship by doing some hands’ on social innovation, instead of creating the conditions or making incentives for social innovation to take place top down. Furthermore, I have already met a lot of very interesting people at Kennisland, but I would love to hear the experiences of other people in social innovation, work and the non-profit/public sector.

Saar Francken
I believe in change by action. Of course it starts with a good idea and you have to have some second thoughts, but you’ll never know if it works if you don’t try to make it work. This preference for action might have something to do with my impatience.. If you see someone tilting her chair and summarizing the actions she wrote down, you can be sure it’s me. I’m Saar Francken and I’m currently unleashing my impatience in several ways, my action radius involves Nieuwe Maan, De Optimist, Dag van de Dialoog and Seven Days of Inspiration. I’m happy to get active with all of you during this Social Innovation Safari!

Thieu Besselink
I wrote my PhD with Richard Sennett, who taught me that it does not matter if your project does not fit in the system, that if you follow what really matters to you there is always a way around. Coming from different disciplines and being born with the desire to not only study the world, but also having a hand in changing it for the better, I tried to find ways of connecting the process of creation to the process of learning. This became 'The River Institute', of which 'The Learning Lab' is an offspring. Because what I found was that the most significant things to learn are those you learn when you are creating. Entrepreneurship - taking risk and responsibility to upgrade reality with a materializing dream - became my vehicle for research, and so my study became a means for change.

Betül EllialtıoÄlu Seçkin (1980)
I studied architecture at İstanbul Technical University (2004), and had masters of science degree in "Architectural Design" also at İstanbul Technical University (2007). My faith in unpredictability of human being, drove my thesis statement to “Personalization and Appropriation of Space”. I worked in some architectural offices in İstanbul about five years and now I am living in Amsterdam. Relation of art, science and human, makes architecture dispensable for me. I have my own social website named "Miimar" to connect this three main subject under architecture.

Martijn van Loon
Martijn van Loon [NL] enjoys having a good cup of enthusiasm to start his day. Graduated from the Technical University in Delft, he is still discovering the world everyday.
